Politicizing Religion Part IV/ Murder In Jesus' Name/ Suspect in slaying of abortion provider George Tiller being returned to Wichita

Politicizing Religion Part IV/ Murder In Jesus' Name/ Suspect in slaying of abortion provider George Tiller being returned to Wichita
BY STAN FINGER AND JOE RODRIGUEZ
The Wichita Eagle
http://www.kansas.com/news/breaking/story/833730.htmlWICHITA - A suspect in this morning's fatal shooting of George Tiller is in custody and on his way back to Wichita, deputy chief Tom Stolz of the Wichita Police Department said today at a news conference.
The 51-year-old male suspect was arrested about three hours after the shooting without incident near Gardner on Interstate 35.
Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. in the lobby of Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation.
Tiller was serving as an usher at the church, one of six ushers listed in the church bulletin. He was handing out bulletins to people going into the sanctuary minutes before being shot.
A church member who did not want to be identified said the gunman threatened another person at the church after the shooting.
Tiller's family issued a statement through Wichita attorneys Dan Monnat and Lee Thompson.
"Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather. Today's event is an unspeakable tragedy for all of us and for George's friends and patients.
"This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace."
Police had said they were looking for white male who was driving a 1990s powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB. The vehicle is registered to an owner in Merriam, which is in the Kansas City area.
Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred said that several law enforcement agencies -- including the FBI and the KBI -- have been called in to help with the case.
Allred said that no one else was injured in the shooting. He would not say how many shots were fired. He said it's unclear whether the shooter exchanged any words with the victim.
Allred said the 10 a.m. church service had already begun at the time of the shooting.
Homicide detectives and Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston arrived at the church after the shooting.
Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were kept inside by police, and those arriving were ushered into the parking lot immediately after the shooting.
Witnesses later were transported downtown for interviews and other members of the congregation were slowly released from inside the sanctuary.
By 12:30 p.m., what appeared to be a body was taken away in an SUV with a patrol car behind it.
At about 12:40, a police dog was taken to check out a black SUV. An investigator wrote down the tag number on the vehicle.
Tiller has long been a focal point of protest by abortion opponents because his clinic, Women's Health Care Services at 5107 E. Kellogg, is one of the few in the country where late-term abortions are performed.
"It's a terrible loss. I'm just really sad about the whole thing," said a former employee of the clinic who asked not to be identified. "He was a great guy. I understand people were against a lot of what he did, but for those who he helped, they'll never forget the kind of person he was."
Mark Mitchell, who lives near where the shooting occurred, said he knew Tiller attended Reformation Lutheran Church because of the periodic protests there and media coverage.
He said the protests would sometimes be as large as two dozen people. The last protest he can remember there was in the fall.
"We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down," anti-abortion group Operation Rescue said in a statement on its Web site. "Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller's family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."
Protesters blockaded Tiller's clinic during Operation Rescue's "Summer of Mercy" protests during the summer of 1991, and Tiller was shot by Rachelle Shannon at his clinic in 1993. Tiller was wounded in both arms, and Shannon remains in prison for the shooting.
The clinic was bombed in June 1986, and was severely vandalized earlier this month. According to the Associated Press, his lawyer said wires to security cameras and outdoor lights were cut and that the vandals also cut through the roof and plugged the buildings' downspouts. Rain poured through the roof and caused thousands of dollars of damage in the clinic. Tiller reportedly asked the FBI to investigate the incident.
No arrests were made in the 1986 bombing.
Sgt. Bart Brunscheen of the Wichita Police Department said earlier today that there has been no activity today at Tiller's clinic, although security crews were being brought in to make sure the building was secure. Officials also were going to check the clinic's security cameras to see if there was any activity over night.
Tiller and his clinic have faced continuous threats and lawsuits. A Wichita jury ruled in March that he was not guilty of illegal abortion on 19 criminal charges he faced for allegedly violating a state law requiring an "independent" second physician's concurring opinion before performing later term abortions. Immediately following the ruling in this criminal case, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts made public a similar complaint against Tiller that was originally filed in December 2008.
Former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, who conducted an investigation into Tiller, said in a statement he was "stunned by this lawless and violent act which must be condemned and should be met with the full force of law. We join in lifting prayer that God's grace and presence rest with Dr. Tiller's family and friends.

Government Apology to American Indians revisited

Government Apology to American Indians revisited

Who says there’s no bipartisanship in Washington these days? A Democratic Congressman from Oklahoma and a Republican Senator froth Kansas have both introduced legislation that wou grant a formal apology to American Indians from the federal gov ernment for ‘years of official depredations” and “ill-con ceived policies”
Congressman Dan Boren ( introduced N.J. Resolution 46 the same day Sen. Sam Brownback(R-1CS)
introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate. The Congressional Bill, which has 23 cosponsors, was efened to the House Committee on Natural Resources, and the Senate Bill, with nine cosponsors, was referred to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Sen. Brown- back introduced similar legislation in 2004.
“The U.S. government broke hundreds of treaties it made with Indian nations; these were govermuent to-government treaties ratified by the U.S. Senate,” said Rep. Boren. “The impact of many U.S. policies is the source of many of the social and economic disparities that Tribes face today. It is time for our nation to face these injustices and reconcile our relations with the Native Americans.”
Sen. Brownb com mented, "The resolution seeks reconciliation and offers an official apology to Native peoples for the poor choices the federal government made in the past. I firmly believe that in order to move forward and have a true reconciliation, the federal government needs to formally apologize.”

MNN: UN ASKEDTO STOP GUNS AT AKWESASNE BORDER

MNN: UN ASKEDTO STOP GUNS AT AKWESASNE BORDER
May 28, 2009

Skarohreh Doug Anderson of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy presented a request to the Secretary of the UN Security Council at 2:58 pm today. Supporters are asked to call 212-963-5258 to ask the UN to send officials to Akwesasne to make peace and to avoid violence from government agents. Kenneth Deer of Kahnawake raised the issue of guns at Akwesasne with the Permanent Forum on Indigenous People. They promised to send some delegates to Akwesasne. A Canadian delegate tried to dissuade any action by the UN. She is helping Prime Minister Harper to stonewall the Indigenous people.

“To the SECRETARY, SECURITY COUNCIL, UNITED NATIONS, UN Plaza, New York City

“A treaty was signed between Britain and the U.S., known as the Jay Treaty of 1794. It was to be an undefended border between Canada and the U.S. The purpose was to bring peace between two warring countries. The two parties have remained peaceful since the War of 1812.

“Canada has always dealt with the Indigenous nations by sending RCMP to speak peacefully with us to avoid belligerence. Historically there was little warfare because guns were not used as they are in the U.S. The U.S. stole the West by killing our people. They almost annihilated us. Sitting Bull left for Canada because he knew he would be safe.

“Canada is trying to imitate the U.S. tactic of using threats in their relationship with us. Canada must not start using shot gun diplomacy like the U.S. whose policy of unilateral violence, threatening and murdering people is engulfing the world.

“Foreigners cannot come into our community with guns. They must consult us according to international law standards. A majority of all our people must give our consent. This has never happened. They have no legal right to set up an armed camp in the midst of the populous Haudenosaunne community of Akwesasne [at the convergence of Ontario, Quebec and New York State].

“THERE MUST BE NO GUNS!

“On June 1 the Canada Border Services Agency guards will try to carry 9mm Berettas, which are meant to kill people. The UN must stop this attempt at ethnic cleansing at Akwesasne. Canada at the behest of the U.S. is trying to commit genocide on us, the real people of mother earth.

“The reasonable decision of the Haudenosaunee, our friends and supporters, is that there should be no guns anywhere on the Canada-U.S. border on the Canadian side. Canada is setting a precedent that any visitor arriving will have the barrel of a gun in their faces, so to say. We want the border station to be removed from the middle of Akwesasne.

“We know the power they presently exercise without the guns. They ridicule and demean us as we come through the border. They use their power of intimidation to pull us into their building away from the protective eyes of our friends and relatives. We have no choice but to cross many times a day to carry on our normal lives. The violence will always be directed at us and not at them. We want peace. These supposed peace officers are acting like war zone combatants. What a contradictory message Canada sends out to the world.

“The Jay Treaty has always been a sign to our people that we can cross that border without fear. Kanento Diabo, Clinton Richard and many others made sure that it was always a border of peace. We Mohawks are trying to bring back harmony between parties. Dekanawida urged the warring parties to throw all the weapons down and bury them.

In the 1960s and 70s some Americans did not want to become soldiers, carry guns and shoot people. They came to Canada. They were called draft dodgers. Many prospered and became fond of Canada because it was peace loving and a peacekeeping society. Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his cohorts want to change Canada into a petite war monger. They want the people to get used to guns, violence and murder just like the U.S.

Today Kenneth Deer of Kahnawake spoke about Canadian aggression towards us to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, 8th Session. He urged the panel to become involved immediately. Victoria Tauli-Corpuz and Tonya Gonella Frichner, panel members, promised they would send a delegation to Akwesasne to observe and report. They were asked to look at the human rights aspect and to follow it up with the Security Council. Cathie Fournier [613-992-0386] of the Canadian government tried her best to downplay it, by saying, “This forum has no teeth to bite” [just gums!]. She promptly called Ottawa.

Canadians and Americans, beware. You could be next. We need your support.

* Help BFC Help the Buffalo

The government agencies carrying out the Bison Management Plan want us to believe that hazing is a sane and humane way to treat buffalo. The events described below, and those captured in still and video images by BFC patrols every day, tell a very different story. Over the course of the past two weeks, BFC field volunteers have witnessed and documented the hazing of newborn calves with broken legs; calves separated from their mothers; DOL helicopters intruding upon private lands against the wishes of the landowners; intensive industrial-strength hazing operations occurring miles within the borders of the world's first National Park and on Forest Service lands outside the Park; and grizzly bears, moose, sandhill cranes and other sensitive species being disrupted. Perhaps worst of all, hazing keeps the buffalo from their critical winter and spring habitat and violently interrupts their birthing season.

Buffalo Field Campaign is the only group documenting these operations on the front lines. If we weren't here to tell the story, you would only be hearing the livestock industry's sugar-coated spin, if anything at all. With your help we will remain with the buffalo, in the field and in the policy arena, until they and their migration are adequately protected.

Please make a tax-deductible contribution today and ensure that we remain a strong presence in the field and on the policy front. Together we can bring these actions against America's only continuously wild population of bison to a halt and earn the bison the protection they need and deserve.

* Update from the Field

These buffalo calves, hazed yesterday inside Yellowstone, are struggling to make it across the Madison River's strong spring currents. Some barely made it. Photo by BFC volunteer Lake.

Since our last update, agents have been harassing bison every day. As I write, bison are once again being chased off of cattle-free Horse Butte, forced off of private lands where they are welcome, and off of public lands habitat where there will never be any cattle. Today, DOL agents again violated the private property rights of the Galanis family, using their helicopter, flying extremely low, to haze bison off the 800-acre buffalo safe zone. Buffalo have even been repeatedly shoved off of grassy meadows within Yellowstone National Park, deeper into the park's interior to "make room" for the bison being hazed off of surrounding Gallatin National Forest lands.

Using U.S. tax dollars, Montana livestock inspectors bask in their assumed taxpayer-funded power while all the involved agencies cooperate, betraying the public trust and the wildlife and wild lands in their care, as they terrorize this unique facet of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Neither buffalo-friendly private lands, Gallatin National Forest, nor Yellowstone National Park are safe places for buffalo - livestock interests, including Yellowstone National Park, are seeing to it that buffalo have no sanctuary.

BFC documents Yellowstone National Park rangers hazing wild bison within the park. Photo by BFC volunteer Lake.

Yellowstone National Park willingly plays into the DOL's hands, ignoring their mission "to protect park resources unimpaired," and allowing these atrocities to occur within park boundaries. Yellowstone allows agents on horseback and the DOL's helicopter to force wild bison off the ground they choose to be on, right in front of the eyes of park visitors. They create hours-long traffic jams, and when questioned by park visitors they misrepresent the issue and act as if they are doing the buffalo a favor, claiming that if hazing didn't occur, the DOL would kill the buffalo. But Yellowstone participates in slaughter as well as hazing, and last year, of the 1,600 killed, they were responsible for the death of 1,400 wild bison. Hazing can also kill, and it certainly causes intense stress and injury to the buffalo. Injuries have been numerous, and the overall condition of the buffalo we have seen has been deteriorating since hazing activities began.

BFC has been documenting numerous injuries to newborn buffalo, as well as all other age groups. Buffalo have been run for miles without rest, water, or time to nurse; chased across swollen rivers, through thick mud flats, fallen timber, paved roads, and dusty trails. While the DOL denies knowing whether they are the cause of injuries, they are without a doubt aggravating existing injuries as well as causing new ones. It is heartbreaking to witness. Yesterday, this little calf barely escaped the river as Park Rangers hazed it and its family for more than twelve miles inside Yellowstone National Park. Park rangers attempted to prevent BFC from documenting these actions against buffalo, but patrols persist so that people will know how Yellowstone and Montana cattle interests are wasting federal tax dollars to squander our natural heritage and placate the livestock industry. BFC has also been documenting the DOL's helicopter flying extremely close to the ground, sometimes lower than 20 feet, hovering over buffalo in rivers, endangering residents and BFC patrols, and terrorizing all the creatures in the ecosystem. It is a centuries-old, cattle industry driven war against wildlife.

Buffalo belong on the landscape. They are attempting to restore themselves and heal the injuries that more than a hundred years of intense livestock production has caused. One example has been playing out on the south side of the Madison River, where agents have been repeatedly harassing and harming the buffalo; since the wildfires that burned the area two summers ago, this area has become favored habitat. The bison are coming to do their ancient work; they are taking advantage of the new areas of green, nutritious grass the fire has helped produce, and by gently grazing, tilling and fertilizing the area with their critical presence, the buffalo will help restore this section of forest, making it a healthier place for all creatures. The buffalo are trying to heal the wounded land, and we must press on to ensure that they are able to fulfill this critical role.

* Ground the DOL's Helicopters: Contact the FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration has been hearing your calls. Please continue to make your voice heard to the FAA and file a complaint about how two FAA-registered helicopters are being used by the Montana Department of Livestock to harass and harm members of America's last wild population of bison. The helicopter disrupts the entire ecosystem and all its inhabitants, including wild bison, grizzly bears, wolves, nesting birds such as Sand Hill cranes, bald and golden eagles, and white pelicans. Human residents on the western edge of Yellowstone National Park are also disturbed by the use of the helicopter, which flies extremely low through neighborhoods to scare up bison, hazing them towards Yellowstone. Yellowstone National Park has shamefully allowed the DOL's helicopter to intrude within the boundaries of the world's first national park.

TAKE ACTION! Please contact the FAA to complain about the use of these two helicopters used by the Montana Department of Livestock DOL during bison hazing operations: N7770X and N1095T. The co-pilot is DOL agent Rob Tierney. Mention that the helicopter has been flying low (20 feet or lower at times) on May 14, 15, 27 and 28. If you have personally witnessed the helicopter hazing bison, your voice is especially needed, but all voices are critical and will make a difference. The DOL is, after all, using federal tax dollars to fly the helicopter to harass America's last wild bison on National Forest and National Park lands. If enough complaints are received, we may be able to ground the DOL's chopper.

* Support the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act

H.R. 980, the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act is being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on National Parks, Forest and Public Lands. NREPA designates tens of millions of acres of roadless areas as wilderness in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, eastern Oregon, and Washington. NREPA also includes the designation of over 3 million acres of backcountry wilderness in Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton National Parks. The only place in the lower-48 where all native species and wildlife remain is in the Northern Rockies. NREPA connects natural, biological corridors, ensuring the continued existence of native plants and animals and mitigating the effects of global warming and it restores public lands severely damaged from roads built into critical wildlife habitat. It is the most important single action that Congress can take to protect wildlife and wildlands in the Northern Rockies. Finally, NREPA specifically mentions the last wild population of American bison in Yellowstone!

Read an informative and compelling opinion-editorial by our friend Paul Richards.

Then take action to help ensure that NREPA becomes law!

* BFC Needs Summer Volunteers in Yellowstone!

BFC is looking for summer volunteers to help with outreach in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Talking to park visitors who are in the company of the buffalo we are trying to protect is a great way to raise awareness and make more friends for the buffalo. If you would like to spend some or all of your summer with BFC, please contact Chris at volunteer@buffalofeildcampaign.org or call 406-646-0070.

See you in West Yellowstone in the land of the last wild buffalo!

Breaking News:
Murder at United Church Indian Residential School Described, Killer Named, at Vancouver Press Conference

Vancouver, Canada:
May 27, 2009

Charlotte Eliza Stewart, centre, describes the murder of her sister, Victoria Stewart, age nine, at the Edmonton Indian Residential School. She is flanked by her brother Moses, and Kevin Annett of The Friends and Relatives of the Disappeared (left)

The family of a child murdered at the United Church's Edmonton Indian residential school went public today at a downtown press conference in Vancouver, and named her killer.

Eliza Charlotte Stewart described the murder, and played a recording from her sister Inez Beryl Spencer, who personally witnessed the attack on their sister Victoria that caused her death.

Victoria, age nine, was struck on the head with a wooden two by four by a residential school staff member named Ann Knizky. Victoria died the next day.

"First I was hit on the back, and then Miss Knizky hit Vicky because she wasn't coming into school fast enough. She fell down some stairs" said Inez in her statement.

"That night Vicky started complaining about head aches and she died the next day in the Camsell hospital. Miss Knizky never was tried for killing her."

Eliza Stewart commented,

"Vicky was shipped back to us in a burlap sack and her brain was missing, so we think they did an autopsy and removed her brain to hide the injury done to it. They never told us anything. And the church then claimed she died of TB, but she never had it."

Eliza Stewart and her brother Moses called upon the United Church to identify the whereabouts of Ann Knizky so that she can be charged with murder, along with the church itself.

"They're not off the hook, just 'cause it happened years ago" said Moses Stewart.

"Even if Miss Knizky is dead, we want the United Church to stand trial too for how they covered this all up and protected a murderer."

The Stewart family will be issuing a formal Letter of Demand to the United Church of Canada and its officers this week, which will require them to surrender Ann Knizky and identify her accomplices, publicly admit its responsibility for the murder, erect a memorial for Victoria, and compensate the family for her loss.

The Stewarts will also be calling on the police to open a criminal investigation into Victoria's death.

The press conference was sparsely attended. Of sixteen media outlets contacted, only two reporters were present. Among the absent media was the so-called "Aboriginal Peoples' Television Network" (APTN).

In a final statement approved by the Stewarts, Kevin Annett of The Friends and Relatives of the Disappeared said,

"Thousands of children died in this manner in the Indian Residential Schools, and not one person in Canada has ever been charged for the death of a child there, or brought to trial. The government is even forbidding names of perpetrators to be named. We will not allow these churches to get away with murder. We call upon others to come forward and name those responsible for the death and torture of innocent children in the residential schools."

Further updates will follow once the police and United Church respond to the Stewarts, or fail to.

(A longer story along with pictures and video recordings of the event will be posted later this week on the website: www.hiddenfromhistory.org).

Jack Murtha's (D-PA) labyrinth of shady dealings involving defense contractors, lobbyists, family members, and friends - and a lot of money. Rep. Murtha's unrivaled ability to direct federal earmarks has earned him the title of the "King of Pork," which, he shrugs off, with "If I'm corrupt, it's because I take care of my district."

Find out more about why Rep. Murtha has been anointed the "King of Pork."

Rep. Murtha has a long practice of trading lucrative earmarks for generous campaign donations. In 2008, he earmarked $192 million for entities in his district, and in the first half of 2009 he requested $134 million, including $75 million in defense spending.

Now that the Justice Department is investigating the PMA Group and Kuchera Corporation -- companies with close ties to Rep. Murtha -- scrutiny by the national news media of Rep. Murtha is increasing.

Rep. Murtha's pay-to-play activities have been in CREW's sights for years. He is a three time all-star on CREW's Most Corrupt Members of Congress.

CREW's new interactive You Don't Know Jack page gives you a guidepost to the crooked connections between Rep. Murtha's earmark requests, campaign donations, and numerous special interests.

As we learn about Rep. Murtha's newest pay-to-play activities, CREW will expand You Don't Know Jack, creating the most comprehensive site on Rep. Murtha's unseemly activities to date.

Thanks for all you do,

The CREW Team

The Story of the American Expeditionary Forces

36th DivisionJoseph Oklahombi
Choctaw, Doughboy, Code Talker &
Mighty Warrior

Pvt. Joseph Oklahombi
Company D, 141st Infantry, 36th Division

Contrary to the Hollywood war movie Wind Talkers, the practice of securing battlefield communication by having Native Americans transmit messages in their own languages did not begin during the Second World War. The tactic was initiated amongst Choctaw National Guardsmen in the Battle for Blanc Mont Ridge in the Champagne Sector of France in October, 1918. Joseph Oklahombi was one of these code talkers, so his story is intertwined with theirs. But this particular code talker was also a mighty warrior; one of the greatest of the doughboys. He reportedly captured more men in the Champagne than Sgt. York did in a comparable and more famous event in the Argonne Forest [132 men captured] two days later. In this article we have tried to focus on the deeds of Pvt. Oklahombi. The fascinating story of the Choctaw Code Talkers can be found by clicking here: (link)

The Choctaw Nation is justifiably proud of its son Joseph Oklahombi. In their newspaper Bishinik and their excellent website they tell his story:

During World War I, Joseph Oklahombi, a Choctaw private, exemplified the courageous fighting spirit of the American Indian . . . Private Joseph Oklahombi, a Choctaw, was awarded the Croix de Guerre by Marshal Pétain himself. Joseph Oklahombi, from Wright City has been lauded as Oklahoma's greatest war hero of World War I. He received citations from General John J. Pershing and French Marshal Pertain for his action in the St. Etienne sector in France.

All Indian Company of the Oklahoma National Guard
Possibly Oklahombi's Unit
A month before the armistice in 1918, Oklahombi and his buddies in Company D, 141st Infantry, 36th Division, were cut off from the rest of the company. They came across a German machine gun emplacement, with about 50 trench mortars. The American soldiers captured one gun and turned its fire back on the Germans. For four days they held the enemy down, until help finally came. Of the enemy, 171 were taken prisoner.

General orders cited Oklahombi for his bravery in moving about 200 yards of open territory, braving machine gun and artillery fire. He was awarded the Silver Star to be worn on the Victory Ribbon by General Pershing, and the Croix de Guerre from Marshall Pertain. Medals were reissued to his son, Jonah, in 1992 and are currently on display at the Choctaw Capitol Museum at Tushka Homma.

Oklahombi, on returning to his homeland, was another soldier home from the war - no triumphant entry into the port of New York, no bands playing nor ticker tape parade.

He was merely another soldier from the war making his way back to his home in the Kiamichi Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma to be with his wife and son. Joseph settled back to a life of farming, hunting and fishing.

As this country grew nearer the brink of war in 1940, Oklahombi was called upon to give his views of another conflict. "The United States must prepare itself and really prepare immediately," he said. "Of course, I'm not in favor of war, but if the peace of the United States is molested, we must be prepared to defend ourselves."

Besides his fighting activities in Europe during the war, Oklahombi was valuable to Allied Troops because of his Indian background. Allies used the Choctaw language as a code for messages - a code never broken by the German intelligence officers.

Oklahombi was killed in an accident near his home on April 13, 1960.

His citation for the Croix de Guerre reads:

Under a violent barrage, [Pvt. Oklahombi] dashed to the attack of an enemy position, covering about 210 yards through barbed-wire entanglements. He rushed on machine-gun nests, capturing 171 prisoners. He stormed a strongly held position containing more than 50 machine guns, and a number of trench mortars. Turned the captured guns on the enemy, and held the position for four days, in spite of a constant barrage of large projectiles and of gas shells. Crossed no man's land many times to get information concerning the enemy, and to assist his wounded comrades.

It is possible that Pvt. Oklahombi's achievements were even greater than indicated in this citation. In researching this article one account was found that had the German group holding out in a cemetery and actually numbering 250 men. It suggested that Joseph killed 79 of them and the remaining 171 were those who decided it was wiser to surrender. Unfortunately, no official verification of this version of events has been found to date. Please contact the editor if you have some substantiating information.

December 20, 1968 film documents The Mohawks Protest to Enforce Jay Treaty of 1794
Intercontinental Cry has posted a new item, 'You Are on Indian Land'

You Are on Indian Land was one of the first films in Canada to give voice to
the concerns of Indigenous People.

Produced in 1969, the film documents a protest that was led by Mohawks from the
Haudenosaunee community of Akwesasne on December 20, 1968.

You may view the latest post at
http://intercontinentalcry.org/you-are-on-indian-land/
At the time, community members were being forced to pay duty on purchases they made in the United States, despite the fact that the Jay Treaty of 1794, also known as the “Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation”, affirmed that they were not required to do so.
The issue surrounding the Treaty has yet to be resolved, as a protest earlier this month reminds us.
The recent protestwas quite different from the one that took place 40 years ago. In ‘68 members from the community blocked off the bridge linking Canada to the United states, which literally cuts through Akwesasne. Confrontation ensued.
“While the news media focused on altercations with the police”, says Albert Ohayonas on the NFB website, filmmaker Mort Ransen took a decidedly different approach. “Ransen showed what led to these altercations and let the Mohawks of the Reserve speak for themselves and tell their own story.”

Osiyo,

We hope everyone had a wonderful week. There were many graduation ceremonies this past week. Now graduates find themselves on a new journey in life. We wish them great success. We hope that they will all remember their family, loved ones, and their Cherokee communities as they set out on life’s new journey.

This weekend is a time to remember those loved ones who have gone before us as well as those who gave their lives to protect our country and Nation. We ask that you take the time to give thanks and remember them this Memorial Day.

As many of you remember the men and women who are sacrificing their lives to protect this country, please remember to volunteer a little bit of your time in helping the Cherokee Nation build a place that honors all Cherokee veterans. The Cherokee Nation is seeking volunteers to help build a veteran center. For more information or to sign up today, please visit www.cherokee.org.

Recognizing veterans, friends, family and communities is always a pleasure. One community recently completed a community work project. The Jay community really came together to build a beautiful 9-acre baseball and softball complex. It is amazing to see a community working together to build something that everyone is proud of. See pictures at http://www.cherokee.org/NewsRoom/FullStory/2881/Page/Default.aspx.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Hope you enjoy this week’s news.

Wado! (Thank you)

In this week's edition, the Cherokee Nation and the State of Oklahoma reached an agreement on prosecuting polluters of the Illinois River. This agreement is significant because it affirms the Cherokee Nation's rights to the Illinois River watershed.

In other legal news, the CN District Court ruled that elected officials who have served since 2003 may run for office again. That means that some tribal councilors and the principal chief are considered to be in their first term and may run again in 2011.

Be sure to watch for our three-part series concerning obesity in Indian Country beginning Monday. The first installment talks about the prevalence of obesity among children from infancy to adolescence. The second and third parts examine obesity among teens and adults.

Cheney torture policy cost thousands of lives

Cheney torture policy cost thousands of lives
Cheney torture policy cost thousands of lives
Dick Cheney says that torturing detainees has saved American lives. That claim is patently false. Cheney's torture policy was directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of American servicemen and women.

Matthew Alexander was the senior military interrogator for the task force that tracked down Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq and, at the time, a higher priority target than Osama bin Laden. Mr. Alexander has personally conducted hundreds of interrogations and supervised over a thousand of them.

"Torture does not save lives. Torture costs us lives," Mr. Alexander said in an exclusive interview at Brave New Studios. "And the reason why is that our enemies use it, number one, as a recruiting tool...These same foreign fighters who came to Iraq to fight because of torture and abuse....literally cost us hundreds if not thousands of American lives."

Watch our exclusive interview with Matthew Alexander.

As Ryan Grim at the Huffington Post reported, "Alexander easily takes down Cheney's arguments...The video is at once an effective rebuke of the former vice president and a sign of how the changing media landscape can flatten the field of political debate."

Professional interviews like this one are possible because your support has helped us build Brave New Studios, a state-of-the-art studio at our Culver City offices. Brave New Studios allows us to do the work the mainstream media routinely fails to do: to rebut lies from people like Dick Cheney with the personal testimonies of those like Mr. Alexander who have seen the facts on the ground. We are committed to bringing you more exclusive interviews and need your help. Contribute to Brave New Studios with a $20 donation.

With the mainstream media obsessing over the personal feud between the President and the former Vice President instead of on the critical question of whether torture has led to thousands of American casualties, the work at Brave New Studios and your contribution are more important than ever.

Breaking News:
from the Mohawk Nation of the Grand River,
near "Brantford, Ontario, Canada"
May 22, 2009

Secretary-General of the Mohawk Nation of the Grand River Rejects Pope's "apology", Disassociates from "chief" Phil Fontaine

In a letter to Pope Joseph Ratzinger at the Vatican, dated May 3, 2009, Arnold Douglas, Secretary-General of the Grand River Mohawk Nation in Ontario, Canada, rejected Ratzinger's recent "apology" to Indian residential school survivors, and disassociated his nation from the actions of the so-called "chief" Phil Fontaine of the government's Assembly of First Nations.

Copies of Arnold Douglas' letter were sent to the International Criminal Court at the Hague, Fontaine, the Eastern Orthodox church, Elizabeth Windsor, aka "queen of England", the Canadian government, and Kevin Annett.

The letter stated, in part,

Dear Pope Benedict,

... We are amazed that your advisors have not advised you that the Assembly of First Nations do not represent the Ohnkwehonwe. We are the original beings and thus the caretakers of this Land ... The Assembly of First Nations, however, represents only those of our People who have become citizens of Canada and do not, in any way, represent us ...

Your Church must accept responsibility, not only for the acts of genocide during the twentieht century but, more importantly, for the original Papal Bulls which confirmed that, as we were without Christian souls, European nations were authorized to seize our lands and, by extension, to murder our People in an endeavour to seize the great wealth which your Church realized we possessed.

As an ongoing integral part of your culpabaility in relation to the acts of genocide committed against us, your church then actively participated in the kidnapping of our children by armed thugs, otherwise known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, forcing them at gun point into residential schools where they were raped and murdered by your clergy and others in a campaign which included germ warfare against us.

At a time when the world still seeks punishment against those responsible for the holocaust against our brothers and sisters of the Jewish tradition, we are offended and, indeed, enraged in the knowledge that over 50% of our children were murdered at the hands of Canada's servants in concert with the action of the Christian church and yet you, as the Head of that Church, appeat to think that all you have to do is offer an apology and all is forgiven.

... We do not accept your apology.

You must be aware and you must not be allowed to forget that clergy, many of them under the authority of the Catholic Church, murdered our children by exposing them to deadly diseases (smallpox, tuberculosis and others) and this in a deliberate attempt to eliminate us ... Accordingly, neither you nor Canadian officials will be permitted to plead ignorance in this regard. Being aware of these atrocities, you have a moral and a legal obligation to seek justice for the victims of such crime. Clearly, therefore, you were, are and always will be held accountable for this mass murder of innocent children.

... We will not enter into a common future with people who would allow such injustice to continue. We demand a full and impartial investigation of those atrocities and that those responsible for them be brought to justice.

We can advise you further that, in view of the ongoing policy of genocide being perpetrated against us by Canada, we have expressed our concerns, as representatives of the sovereign Mohawk Nation, to the International Criminal Court at the Hague and this with a view to having the Court acknowledge our sovereignty as a Nation, and, by extension, to seek an investigation of the atrocities being perpetarted against us by Canada.

... As an initial step in that process, we would anticipate that you would withdraw the Papal Bulls which, in our opinion, were responsible for the genocidal policy ... throughout Turtle Island.

Please acknowledge receipt of the present correspondence.

Sincerely,
(signature)

URGENT!
THERE WILL BE NO GUNS! “YOU ARE ON INDIAN LAND” - 1968 FILM ABOUT AKWESASNE BORDER BLOCKADE – June 1 CBSA guards will try to carry 9mm Berettas

MNN. May 27, 2009. “If the colony of Canada wants to arm their border guards, then move it out of our community”, is the reasonable decision of Mohawks and our friends and supporters.

It was a bitterly cold day on December 20, 1968. Over 500 Mohawks stood at the Canada Customs and blocked the international bridge on Cornwall Island in the St. Lawrence River. This border crossing is right in the middle of the populous Haudenosaunne community of Akwesasne [at the convergence of Ontario, Quebec and New York State]. This 41 year old film records the violations of our sovereignty which continue to this day. The people who took part in the 1968 resistance are just a little older. We have never lost our spirit. We always kept up our vigilance over colonial Canada’s abuse of power and our rights.

At Akwesasne there are escalating brutal attacks by the CBSA Canada Border Services Agents. These maniacs constantly racially profile and provoke us. We have to cross many times a day to carry on our normal lives. On June 1 2009 these goons will try to carry 9 mm Beretta guns. They could instigate violence and death. This border crossing must be removed. We object to putting deadly guns in the hands of these openly racist border guards. http://intercontinentalcry.org/you-are-on-indian-land/

Guns are for killing people. We would appreciate your help by signing the following petition! http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/NoGunsForCBSA/index.html

The Mohawks are asking for worldwide support. On May 26th Cornwall city council passed a resolution that no guns should be given to the CBSA guards. They are peace officers, not war zone combatants. Prime Minister Stephen Harper wants to militarize the border. The RCMP must complete a 16 week firearms course. Border guards are only required to take a 3 week course.

Stopping the Fraud, Naming the Names:
Stopping the Fraud, Naming the Names:
A New Direction for Survivors of Church Violence

by Kevin D. Annett
www.hiddenfromhistory.org

"Lots of people didn't survive. That's what people have to know. And there's no genuine justice if we can't name our abusers."
Christine Buckley, Irish survivor of Catholic Sister of Mercy orphanage, Dublin, May 20, 2009

"The Commissioners shall not receive into evidence any allegation of wrongdoing, or shall allow the naming of names of alleged abusers ..."
from the mandate of Canada's "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" into Indian Residential Schools, 2008

This coming week, a lone aboriginal woman named Charlotte will face the media in Vancouver, Canada and will name the name of the church official who murdered her sister at a Canadian Indian residential school.

Charlotte is doing what her natural right and justice compels, which is to tell the truth and hold criminals accountable: a right that has been systematically denied to those who have survived institutionalized violence at the hands of Christian churches around the world.

That denial has been engineered by the very churches that killed and ruined innocent lives, in collusion with governments and police agencies. And this criminal conspiracy to obstruct and deny justice has spanned continents, repeating itself in the United States, in Canada, in Ireland, and wherever else Christian boarding schools and orphanages operated.

One would think that a crime so huge and systematic would arouse the world to anger and protest. Instead, the Catholic church and its lesser equivalents are allowed to protect themselves from prosecution and shield their rapists and murderers while feigning "regret and concern".

Perhaps because of its very enormity, and the stamp of approval on rape and murder tacitly placed on these crimes by compliant governments, this incredible miscarriage of justice has yet to be named for what it is. For in a system where Christian religious institutions are protected by law and bankrolled in the billions, one can indeed expect nothing different than the self-absolution and protection of the wrongdoer that presently poses as "healing and reconciliation".

There is an alternative, but it is a risky one, for it requires first of all that the rapists and murderers be directly named by those whom they violated. And yet this new step is the only way forward for survivors who have faced one roadblock after another in their struggle to secure real justice.

In the west coast Canadian networks of our Friends and Relatives of the Disappeared movement, we've begun a campaign called Naming the Names, to counter the government's bogus "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" and its policy of protecting abusers at residential schools by not allowing their names to be mentioned publicly.

Our campaign involves publishing the identities and names of documented abusers who have been identified by three or more of their victims, and establishing public tribunals to which the named abuser is summoned to answer charges against him or her. The proceedings and evidence will then be video recorded and posted on the internet on a special website.

This effort is solidly backed by common law and precedent, which allows citizens to make arrests and hold accountable known criminals when police forces and the courts refuse to do so.

It has been only such direct actions from below, by the survivors themselves, that have prompted government and church to respond at all. We must carry on such pressure at this critical moment, when the major Christian churches are working jointly with governments to forever avoid any responsibility for their own crimes against humanity.

So it's up to everyone reading this to carry this campaign to its next level, and name those responsible for genocide and murder, and bring them to direct justice.

I invite everyone to come and witness our first step in this campaign, at Charlotte's press conference, this Wednesday, May 27 at 10:00 am, in Classroom #2, on the third floor of the Carnegie Centre at Main and Hastings street in downtown Vancouver.

Naming the names is Charlotte's answer to the murder of her sister - and our response to religious wolves in sheep's clothing.

Stay tuned.

More than 500 at Mass say goodbye to couple

More than 500 at Mass say goodbye to couple

By Susan Olp - May 26, 2009

CROW AGENCY - Teddy Little Light and Juliet Toinetta-Little Light lost their lives on a bitterly cold night in late December.

On Saturday, the husband and wife were laid to rest on a green hillside in the Lodge Grass Cemetery, the warmth of the sun wrapping its arms around the mourners who came to say goodbye.

The couple, along with their 3-month-old son, Wyatt, were last seen Dec. 23. Law enforcement and family members remained vigilant in their search for the family, whose pickup was found Jan. 5 between Fort Smith and Highway 91.

Finally, last Monday, a ranch hand discovered scattered human remains, which were identified after an autopsy Wednesday as belonging to Teddy, 30, and Juliet, 25. Searchers also located adult and baby clothing at the scene, but no trace of Wyatt was found.

So, Saturday's funeral Mass at the multipurpose center in Crow Agency, and the interment that followed, included only Teddy and Juliet. Their obituaries, read during the Mass, referred to the infant as a member of the surviving family, along with his older brother, 2-year-old Teddy Jr.

At the time the family went missing, Teddy Jr. was staying with his grandmother, LaTonna Little Light Long Soldier, Teddy's mother, who was helping raise the child. The toddler attended the funeral Saturday, blissfully unaware of the sad occasion.

More than 500 mourners attended the two-hour funeral Mass. They filled chairs on the floor of the auditorium and the bleachers on either side of the room.

A single, dark-green casket sat at the front of the multipurpose center, draped in colorful Indian blankets, flowers and a photograph of Teddy. Flowers decorated the front of the stage, and white poster-boards placed on tables were filled with photos of Teddy and Juliet growing up, and as a family.

The Rev. Charles Robinson celebrated the Mass. He acknowledged the pain those listening to him had endured.

"There is certainly no one at the Crow Reservation who has suffered as much as you," Robinson said. "The tension, the anxiety in the last five months has become almost unbearable."

He encouraged the mourners to find peace in the midst of suffering, knowing that Teddy and Juliet have themselves found peace.

"This young couple stands in awe before their God with amazing peace and love in their hearts," Robinson said. "They wouldn't come back no matter how much they love you. For they were taking a step as husband and wife into something you and I could barely understand, into the heart of God, the way the truth and the life. They were taking the step to peace, to joy and to love."

Shobe Little Light eulogized Teddy. He remembered him as "a heck of a basketball player."

"You could see his passion out there for the sport and his wanting to win and wanting to be a leader," Little Light said. "That's one thing he was, he was a leader. He commanded respect in a humble way."

Little Light called Teddy noble, funny, serious and strong-willed. Teddy also loved to arm wrestle.

Little Light acknowledged that Teddy had recently gone through some tough times, but said he had hope for both Teddy and Juliet.

"The time I saw Teddy and Juliet last, I could see they were going through growing pains," he said. "They were growing together, and they were changing things."

Juliet was raised by her uncle and aunt, Crow Tribe Chairman Cedric Black Eagle and his wife, Audrey. Juliet had lots of friends, said Randall Black Eagle, who eulogized his cousin, and added that she had a good sense of humor.

"In any situation, she always had the ability to find the funny side of things, and she had a laugh none of us will ever forget," he said.

She was resilient, having endured tragedy at a young age, and she was filled with love for others.

"Her phone calls to Mom and Dad always ended with 'I love you,' " Black Eagle said. "She was never afraid to tell people that she loved them."

No one was ever as loyal as Juliet, he said, and her family always came first. She seldom missed a family gathering. That's why, when she didn't show up for Christmas, the family suspected that something was wrong. Christmas presents for her and her family would remain under the Christmas tree until February.

When she missed her grandmother's funeral, in early January, the family took action, notifying law enforcement and seeking help from the public.

"From that day until the present, our families would not stop looking for Juliet and her family," Black Eagle said.

He said his family believes God gives people no more than they can bear.

"And in his infinite wisdom, God must have known that it would take five months for our family to bear, to be strong enough, to accept Juliet's death," he said. "We draw comfort that she is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

But Black Eagle said his family will never stop looking for answers about why Juliet and Teddy would leave their truck half-full of gas on a below-zero, blizzard-filled night and walk up on a ridge more than 2' miles away with a 3-month-old baby.

"For this, we will honor their memories by finding answers to these questions," he said.

After two more people spoke, Celeste Tobacco sang an a cappella rendition of "Amazing Grace," and then the crowd viewed a slide show that portrayed the couple growing up and married.

After that, mourners drove to the Lodge Grass Cemetery for a second, brief ceremony. Temperatures were in the 70s, the sky was periwinkle blue, and it was filled with gauzy white clouds.

As is tradition, John Pretty On Top and Tilton Old Bull spoke in Crow, thanking everyone for coming to the funeral, and for the help rendered by so many people. Then the casket was lowered into the ground and men took turns with shovels, filling the grave, as women sitting nearby wept inconsolably.

After flowers were placed on top of the dirt mound, men knelt next to the grave and cried. A bird, possibly a hawk, wheeled in circles above the cemetery, as Old Bull spoke a few last words.

And then the bird flew away.

GLOBAL MIND CONTROL TYRANNY – FAKE RELIGIONS, NEW AGE & CORPORATISTS SNATCHING BASIC NATURE

GLOBAL MIND CONTROL TYRANNY – FAKE RELIGIONS, NEW AGE & CORPORATISTS SNATCHING BASIC NATURE

MNN. May 22, 2009. There are several types of mind control: cults, phony religions and off-the-wall therapies. A new world religion is being invented to force on everybody. It’s a mishmash of legitimate religious movements, new age psychobabble and a sprinkling of so-called traditional ideologies. We are all supposed to be drawn in to be controlled by a small group of cult leaders.

Their mission statement to the masses is that the end justifies the means to bring about universal peace, harmony and love. Psychological coercion through manufactured religion is part of setting up a worldwide totalitarian society.

At one time several elite factions fought each other to rule the world. Now they work together. The cultist leaders are secret, self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic and not democratically accountable. They want to whack everybody into enslavement. “The easier to control you, my dear!”

Is the 11th Century Inquisition being resurrected? This was a time when critics of the politicians controlled by the Catholic Church killed off millions who didn’t agree with them? Will the military brutalize objectors and those not devoted enough to these newly constructed universal beliefs? Where’s the holy land this time? Everywhere there’s oil and other valuable resources! www.gotquestions.org

Manitou Foundation in Colorado run by Maurice Strong uses cult principles to develop the new world religion and to implement it. These same maneuvers underlie the corporate world, campuses, religions, medical and other professions, prisons and advertising campaigns. President Obama’s speech writers use these same tactics all the time.

Crafters of mental tyranny go after the upper crust who become the mainstay of their hierarchy. They are indoctrinated into the new plan through powerful secret societies in ivy league universities. They are trained to run the new world order and the global mind control needed to sustain it. To keep their loyalty, cult leaders get something on each, usually of a sexual or more unsavory nature.

Worldwide we are being weakened by depravation, wars, diseases and various fears. We are deliberately being made vulnerable, confused, anxious, depressed and hurt to ripen us for the new world religion.

New world religions are narcissistic, quasi-therapeutic and eastern oriented. Strategies are humility and public confession to lower self-esteem; threats and guilt; no thinking; and critics are accused of siding with the devil. Some start hallucinating about having contact with extra terrestrials who give them orders.

Some manipulation techniques are love bombing which is giving love and then sudden disapproval, contradictions and verbal abuse. The altered state is brought on by hypnosis, trances, prolonged chanting, deprivation of privacy, sense of time, food and sleep. Other tactics to force conformity are overly strict rules, guilt, fear, no questions and tight rules on living, dressing, information, music, reading and the internet. Some cult leaders have sex with anyone, male, female or child, within their orbit under their control.

Individual reasoning powers have to be weakened so we can be broken down physically and mentally to become highly vulnerable to suggestions. It takes 3 days to two weeks to bring draftees into line. We are supposed to go through a sudden drastic personality change called “snapping”. We will have difficulty reasoning, choosing or criticizing. The new world religion steps in and interprets our reality and reason for living. Then we can be put into intense robotic group thinks and then told what to do.

Followers who are no longer valuable are thrown to the wolves. Those wanting to leave will be threatened. The successful walkaways will have to hide. They will be hunted down, ostracized and disappeared for having too much inside information. They will suffer from withdrawal such as confusion, depression, disorientation, insomnia, amnesia, suicidal tendencies and violent emotional outbursts.

We are seen as human livestock that belong to the few. The whole world is their farm, with electronic dog collars and brain chips called licenses. Schools are training children to love the farm. The leaders don’t want us to be free who can manage our own lives. Today’s brutality is staged for us to get used to the idea that we must conform or else!

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The new world religion promises faith, safety and prosperity. They are pyramid authoritarian regimes, using deception to recruit and maintain themselves. Since we are half starved, blinded and abused, we are being forced into having no choice but to embrace it.

Who will try and convict those opposed to this new dogma? It could be a charismatic leader that everybody will have to bow down to. It will be a universal concoction staffed by priests or faith keepers of the new world order. Their job will be to seduce, terrify and wean us away from our real custodial relationship with the natural world and each other. Those questioning their newly formed orthodox doctrines will be tortured. Concentration camps will hold critics before they are shipped to parts of the world with grotesque punishments and no human or civil rights.

The Iroquois Confederacy could be deemed as terrorists for our efforts to assert our inherent sovereignty. Since everybody will unilaterally become an international person, we could be taken to The Hague and charged with war crimes. We’re being brainwashed into becoming universal humans for their ends. Wiretaps, surveillance and imprisonment will be justified under new international security laws.

Unethical double standards have to be pointed out. Deprogramming requires critical thinking, seeing the contradictions and twisted ideology. Self-reflection and will power break down the control pyramid. We need truthful information so we can clear our minds of the big lies that have been constantly fed to us worldwide. We have to relearn how to think and control our will. Group consensus gives each a voice to fully discuss issues before making a decision. Tight family relationships keep us from being isolated and victimized.

Sending us to the Gulag [Stalin’s Soviet prison] is an old threat. We ask too many questions. They think they have to control our minds. The supposed world rulers of the masses will call their critics crazy and paranoid. Watch out for anyone who calls up your friends and tells them you have had a mental breakdown!

Peoples who occupied North America before the arrival of the Europeans in the 15th cent. They have long been known as Indians because of the belief prevalent at the time of Columbus that the Americas were the outer reaches of the Indies (i.e., the East Indies). Most scholars agree that Native Americans came into the Western Hemisphere from Asia via the Bering Strait in a series of migrations. From Alaska they spread east and south. The several waves of migration are said to account for the many native linguistic families while the common origin is used to explain the physical characteristics that Native Americans have in common (though with considerable variation)Mongoloid features, coarse, straight black hair, dark eyes, sparse body hair, and a skin color ranging from yellow-brown to reddish brown. Sacred Sites –vs- A Modern Day Disease, Greed
“Our Sacred Ground is Not Your Playground”
By Tamra Brennan
Founder/Director
Protect Sacred Sites Indigenous People, One Nation

Bear Butte is a sacred site located in the Black Hills, eight miles east of Sturgis South Dakota.

The mountain is sacred to many of the Plains Tribes, including Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Northern and Southern Cheyenne, Northern and Southern Arapaho. For thousands of years, Tribes have traveled up to hundreds of miles to Bear Butte for their annual ceremonies. Many people today still make their annual journeys to the mountain, from May through August.

Unfortunately, the ongoing struggle to Protect Bear Butte, against the continual encroachment and desecration caused by Sturgis Bike Rally venues, continues today. We have been battling these venues near Bear Butte since 2006. These large biker bars and concert venues continue to expand with further development, hosting huge concerts, bringing tens of thousands of people, vehicles and motorcycles towards Bear Butte.

During the August 2008 Sturgis Rally, Glencoe Campground’s, Rock’n the Rally venue located on Hwy 79 one mile south of Bear Butte, hosted the group KISS bringing absolute chaos to the area. Seven miles and three hours of gridlocked traffic, all headed towards Bear Butte. The same day, Buffalo Chip located off of Hwy 34 & 79, hosted Senator McCain and Kid Rock, multiplying to the chaos. Long time local residents stated they had never seen anything like this before, the worse traffic and chaos they had ever seen out this way.

The following day after the huge concert, a tornado warning swept thru Sturgis causing severe hail and thunderstorms. It was one of the worst thunderstorms in many years, right in the middle of the Sturgis Rally. Two people were actually struck by lightning at Glencoe Campground during this storm. The very campground, that caused all the chaos the previous day, next to Bear Butte. Coincidence, or a clear message from the Creator, you be the judge.

In December 2008, the virtual 600 acre bar, Glencoe Campground and Rock’n the Rally were sold to non residents Sean Clark and Devorah Lopez from California and Arizona, for a reported $8.4 million dollars. There are serious character issues with these individuals, which will be disclosed during the upcoming June 2nd hearing at Meade County Commissioners.

Another attack against the mountain during the 2008 Sturgis Rally, were helicopter flights from four separate Rally venues adjacent to Bear Butte, including Broken Spoke Campground, Buffalo Chip, Ride N Rest Campground and Lamphere Ranch.

In June 2008, Target Logistics, the new owners of Broken Spoke Campground, in their tenacity were quoted in the Rapid City Journal regarding the helicopter rides, stating "If someone asks to fly over Bear Butte, we'd take them unless it's not allowed." After several months of battling against it, publicly opposing the issue with our media campaign, working with FAA, and during the Rally physically being on the ground talking with these pilots, we were able to put a stop to flights over the mountain. After a huge fight regarding this issue, Broken Spoke finally stated they would not be flying over the mountain, and their helicopter pilot never showed up during the Rally. Three of the venues continued to offer flights, the pilots agreed to stay away from flying over the mountain.

The desecration from these venues worsens each year, with what they bring to the sacred mountain, Bear Butte. The disrespect is evidenced with loud music heard for miles, huge concerts, strobe lights, helicopters, motorcycle traffic, pyrotechnic firework shows, lude behavior, drunkenness and a half a million people, within less than a few miles of one of this nation’s most sacred places, Bear Butte.

People often ask, how can they get away with this and why isn’t the local governments doing anything about it? The simple answer is called greed, it is yet another sign of the times, a modern day disease that has consumed people. It continues to feed upon today’s money hungry corporate America, and a local county that refuses to take a stand to protect a sacred site and historical landmark. The bottom line is the tourism, promoting the Rally and adult entertainment in these venues, supersedes any Native American religious beliefs, our spirituality, the sacredness and tranquility of the mountain.

Laws were created and are in place to protect our religious rights, Including, The American Indian Freedom of Religion Act of 1978, Executive Order 13007
Protection and Accommodation of access to Indian Sacred Sites, and Native American Free Exercise of Religion Act of 1993, these laws are continually violated by the decisions made by the Meade County Commissioners and these venues.

In last years Meade County Commissioners hearing, I proposed a question asking for clarification on the Commissioners definitions of a “church.” Commissioner Robert Mallow responded to my questioning, stating that Bear Butte is NOT considered a “church” under their definition, that he was not going to debate religion with me.

Thousands of years of Tribal Nations coming here to pray, to fast, for healing and for guidance apparently doesn’t met their standards for classifying the mountain as a church. These statements were not only insulting, but demoralizing to an entire people’s spirituality and belief system.

As a local resident, I wonder what desecration the mountain will be subjected to this year, praying there will be a way to stop it. We have to continue to speak out and oppose what is occurring at all of our sacred places, if we sit back and accept the destruction, our way of life will fade away in a memory long so forgotten.

There have been many ups and downs in this issue, with many losses, but also a few victories. Each year there has been progress in these efforts, creating awareness for the issue, gaining support from across the country especially within the biker communities. The word is reaching out to the bikers about our plight to Protect Bear Butte, thru our ongoing efforts with the Bikers for Bear Butte campaign, which has been very successful thus far. Last year, we found that the bikers themselves were discussing the issue and helping us spread the word in a positive way, about the protection efforts. Education is a critical tool in order to help make a difference.

Many people, Native and non Native attend the Rally to participate in the events, we respectfully ask everyone to please remember the plight, to Protect Bear Butte and not endorse, patronize and participate in these venues surrounding Bear Butte. No matter how much you may want to see your favorite bands playing at these Rally venues, please remember these concerts surrounding Bear Butte are violating the sacred mountain! Help us take a stand against these Rally venues that continue to disrespect Bear Butte and its spiritual and historical significance.

We would like to ask each and every one of you, to assist us with the Protect Bear Butte struggle by helping spread the word!
