Bucs Scalp Warriors

Bucs Scalp Warriors

The above headline was on the front page of the Darien News in Darien, Ga. in McIntosh County

Many people don't understand what this kind of terminology means to Indigenous People. They don't know that this is demeaning, racially loaded, is a stereotype, and reduces Native Americans to the same level as dogs, horses and other non human mascots.

Now the NCAA has come out officially against "Indian mascots" on September 28th, 1998. But we still have the little small towns that don't understand or don't want to understand.

McIntosh County Academy Usually puts signs all over the highways saying Scalp The Warriors. But in the Darien News there isn't a quote of them saying anything. Maybe they could tell the paper that young people don't need to be taught these things. It doesn't matter where you are in the world. Everyone's opinion is important, especially to The Darien News.

As individuals Dave and Sharon have spoken openly about this to people here. But maybe they have forgotten or not. Since Save The Sacred Sites Alliance is sacred site and burial protection, we have not made this the focus of our efforts. But this is just as much a culture vulture as the sweat lodge dude.
