Join us tonight as we welcome Dr. Ira Helfand, co-Founder and Past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), as he talks about the upcoming vote on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) and the critical role that Georgia plays.

Dr. Helfand will be speaking widely throughout Georgia about the public health risks of nuclear weapons attack, current nuclear weapons policy, New START and the role Georgia's Senator Johnny Isakson, as a Senate Foreign Relations Committee member, has as a key player in this treaty, as well as Georgia's Senator Saxby Chambliss' role on ratificaiton.

Dr. Helfand continues to serves on PSR's Board of Directors and represents PSR on the Board of PSR's global federation, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. In December of 2009 he represented PSR and IPPNW at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony honoring President Obama.

On May 15, 2008 Dr. Helfand testified before the US Senate Homeland Security Committee on developing a more adequate system in the United States for responding to medical disasters in general and nuclear terrorism in particular.

In 2009, Ira described the dangers of nuclear war to CNN and the necessity to rid the world of these weapons, stating, "These bombs are not some force of nature, we build them and we can take them apart." http://www.cnn.com/2009/OPINION/12/07/obama.nuclear.prevention/index.html

Dr Helfand is a specialist in Emergency Medicine and internal medicine and practices in Springfield MA. He received his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Harvard College and received his Medical Degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

He has published widely on the medical consequences of nuclear war and nuclear terrorism, including articles in the New England Journal of Medicine and the British Medical Journal, and has lectured throughout the United States and in Canada, the UK, Norway, Sweden, France, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, and Cuba.
