EMPUJANDO TINTA   Taller Tupac Amaru: 10 Years of Collaborative Activism Exhibition dates: May 7 - June 20, 2012 (Facebook)  at the Galeria de la Raza, 2857 24th Street, San Francisco.  Empujando Tinta is an exhibition of screen prints celebrating the ten-year anniversary of Taller Tupac Amaru (the Taller).  In 2003, the Oakland based Taller was founded by artists Jesus Barraza, Favianna Rodriguez, Estria Miyashiro and Melanie Cervantes who joined in 2007. Empujando Tinta features work from the Taller’s member artists, as well as work from its collaborations and commissions with other artists. Inspired by the collective work models of the Mexican Taller de Gráfica Popular, the Cuban based Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America, the Chican@ Art Movement and Bay Area organizations like Mission Gráfica and Self Help Graphics, Barraza and Rodriguez established the Taller to provide a space that both prints political posters to galvanize communities into action, as well as produces fine art prints created by artists of color. Since its inception, the Taller has produced over 17,000 prints that encompass local and international causes such as: globalization, indigenous sovereignty, migration, gentrification, human rights, and LGBT justice.  This unique practice enhances the ability and value of the graphic tradition to transcend borders, disseminate information and incite action.

Precious Cargo, Childbirth and Cradle Baskets in California Indian Culture.  Museum of the American Indian, 2200 Novato Blvd, Miwok Mark, Novato, CA 94927.  415.897-4064. Exhibit runs through August but looks like it’s still up.   California people have relied on cradle baskets for centuries to protect their children and also to play a role in shaping a child's character and directing his or her future.  Concern for the child's future is also reflected within the cradle, as the basket becomes a vehicle for the community's most serious views concerning health and one's relationship with the world.  The tribe's survival lay within the cradle basket.  Funded by SF Foundation, City of Novato, Marco Vidal, Marin County Supervisors, Rocky Fund, Lyons Family Endowment, Members and Donors.

SUPPORT:
Lehman Brightman Eviction Fund. Dear friends and allies of UNA. The family of Lehman Brightman has been evicted from our home of over 26 Years, and must be completely moved out by Wednesday, June 5th. Today as my father Lehman Brightman lies in a negligent care facility, he has been rendered homeless in the last days of his life, and knows that the only home he has is within his body and his spirit. After 20 months of struggle to secure my father’s home, we fought a good fight but have lost this battle to the system. Once more the corporation and the state have worked in tandem and wielded their power to take away from a working man what is rightfully his. He has raised a family, served his country, championed the oppressed, and worked all his life. His life is a mission that cannot and will not be foreclosed on. He has paid in full.  Now it is up to me and others who care to help in any way, to honor his life’s work by securing his possessions and preserving the historical legacy of his many struggles for Indian people. If you can help, with money, with time, with a truck or with storage space, it is all appreciated. I have compiled a list of needs that we have in preparation for the eviction including volunteer time, funds and rental items. If there is anything you can help with, please contact me, Quanah Brightman. Wopila tanka. Monetary gifts are greatly appreciated and can be mailed to: United Native Americans, Inc., 2434 Faria Avenue, Pinole, CA 94564. FMI, unitednativeamericansinc@gmail.com or 510.672-7187

"When crazy people call you crazy, you know you're sane.
When evil people call you evil, you know that you are a good person.
When lairs call you a liar, you know that you are truthful.
Know who you are and don't let others tell you who you are." - Dave Kitchen
