Cherokee Nation Newsletters

The Cherokee Nation celebrated two appointments to important posts and the opening of a $9.5 million road project last week.

Delaware County residents can enjoy a new 9.75-mile stretch of paved highway that the Cherokee Nation just completed. Delaware County Road North 4580 connects Kenwood to the Twin Oaks area. It was paved to provide safer travel for tribal and non-tribal citizens living in the area and opens a new corridor to increase economic development. This year, the Cherokee Nation plans to invest $11.8 million in road and bridge repairs.

The tribe’s senior advisor of education services, Neil Morton, has been appointed as a Sequoyah Fellow by Northeastern State University. Morton, of Stilwell, will keep an office at NSU and serve as an advisor on the liberal arts, language and indigenous studies programs while continuing his position with the tribe. The honorary position had only ever been held by the late Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller.

Fluent Cherokee speaker Candessa Tehee was named Cherokee Heritage Center’s new executive director. Tehee, of Tahlequah, formerly managed the tribe’s language program. Tehee will graduate this spring from the University of Oklahoma with a doctorate in sociocultural and linguistic anthropology.

Race is a Construct

 Race is a Construct
From the Eagle Watch
January 30, 2014

Commentary from Kittoh Nokomis

Race is a Construct

We are All Human Beings

It's a fact!  Any fertile human being can produce fertile offspring with
any other fertile human being of the opposite sex.  We are not separate
species like lion & tiger, donkey & horse or gorilla & human.

Women cannot make babies with women nor can men make babies with men.
Regardless of our cultural proclivities, this is a fact.

So then, what about race?  It's easy to put labels on things but are they
accurate?  What does race really describe?  Is it a shade of skin colour?
Or is it a place of origin?

It looks to us that we are all shades of brown, some very pinkish and some
purplish.  We all shed the same red blood when cut.  We share over 95% of
our DNA, not only with each other but also with our humble relatives, the

A social system of racism and hierarchy has been established, based
entirely on a fraud of racial difference.   Many lies follow out of the
original lie of race.

When newcomers came to these shores, they were welcomed as brothers until
they attacked like enemies.  The Crown sought to keep Indigenous apart
from settlers because the Crown wanted to cash in.  The settlers were
wanting to become "Indians" in droves because they saw a better way of
life.  This was not permitted.  It's still an issue.  Being a Wannabee
isn't such a bad thing as long as you're prepared to pay your dues.

Today, it appears the only choice for Indigenous is to join in the frenzy
to dig up the earth.  Is this the only way we can survive??  I thought
Indigenous ties to the land were an essential ingredient in being
Indigenous.  If you're out to dig it all up, can you really call yourself
Indigenous?  When you can no longer hear the cries of the Earth through
the voices of all her Children, how dare you call yourself Indigenous??

Assimilation is real.  Your identity is much more than your Face.  Your
name is something you hide behind.

For many years, mainstream archeologists have claimed that human life
began in Africa based on the findings of one Louis Leakey.  Our legends
have always indicated otherwise.  A growing body of archeological evidence
also reveals human origins on Turtle Island.  People like Jeff Goodman
have dedicated their lives to bringing out the truth.  This is not
politically expedient so these teachings have been suppressed.

Instead of claiming to be "First Nations" who got here after the last ice
age about 12,000 to 10,000 years ago, we assert that we have been here for
"time immemorial".  This is based on 125,000 years to 250,000 years which
is a really long time, forever if you only live for 100 years. It could be
even longer.

Yes, we went south for awhile. We also traveled all around the world
exchanging dna with people wherever we went.

The discussion continues on forums like this one:

It appears that people cling to what they already know even when the
contrary evidence stares them in the face.  How do any of us really know
where and when human life began on earth??  Isn't it rather arrogant to
think we KNOW.  While some Biblical scholars claim it is a historical
record, our legends are stories that we tell to comfort ourselves.  Do you
want to hear the story of why dogs sniff butt??  We got answers for
everything but not everyone takes these stories seriously.

Scientists take themselves way too seriously.  They just hate to admit
they are wrong and have to change their theories.  When the first
newcomers came here, our ancestors told them about tigers and elephants.
The  newcomers said, no, you don't know what you're talking about.  We
know better than you that tigers and elephants could not possibly have
lived here.

Then their scientists found the bones of saber toothed tigers and woolly
mammoths.  They forgot how we had told them this in the first place.  Some
people like to think they know it all and everyone else is ignorant.

We live in an age when science is like religion.  Watch out, you don't
utter some "blasphemy" against science.  Look at how scientist
whistleblowers are suppressed.  We just read a piece about
microbiologists.  What secrets did they take to their graves?, we shudder
to ask.

We like the legend about how the first humans fell to earth like stars,
each starting up a family, then clan, then tribe.  As David Michael Wolfe
said, "Tribes and nations come and go; clans and families are forever".

We are told today that less than 20% of humans are Indigenous.  Just what
does this mean?  That everyone else is from some other planet?  Or that
80% of people are not living in a place to which they are Indigenous.  Or
does it mean 80% have lost Indigenous ties to the land, including

How does it work for all the people like me and mine who are of "mixed
racial ancestry"?  We're not "mixed blood" anymore than anyone else.  We
are all a mixture of our two parents.

There's a thing called recessive gene which brings up a lot of unhealthy
traits.  It looks like a good shot of outside blood rejuvenates a tribe.
Humans are highly promiscuous creatures as well as tending to migrate.  We
adopt traits and practices that appear to help us survive in some way.

Today, everybody is in a big identity crisis.  Here, on Turtle Island we
are caught up in a struggle where ethnic identity is of paramount
importance.  It's about Indigenous title and who are the rightful owners
of the land.

Many questions arise like "what happened?"  My elders taught that the land
owns us.  What a piece of arrogance to claim "ownership" of the land.

Yes, we have our ancestral territories which we can mark out but it's not
the same as ownership.  The word "my" has many meanings.  There's a big
difference between saying, "my car" and "my mother".  Describing
relationships with the word "my" is completely different from claiming
property.  WTF.

The English language is greatly lacking in nuance of meaning.

We anticipate someone getting ticked off here.  We have to ask, "What
about the descendants of Joseph Brant and family??  The Turtle Clan people
whose mothers are Ongwehonweh and whose fathers are Masons, sons of Robert
Kerr etc.??"

What about the descendants of the fur traders who made babies with
Indigenous women, guys like George Simpson of HBC.  After turning out
their "country wives", all these colonial men now have a stake through
their offspring with Indigenous women.

Nowadays everyone is becoming more territorial and warlike.  Is it because
of overpopulation?  Or is it because of lifestyle that requires so much
digging up of minerals and elements that also destroys the water and air
as well as the face of the land where animals and plants, All Our
Relations, can thrive in harmony?

Racial hatred is based on a lie.  We had to say this finally.  It is just
self evident to us.  Racial hatred is not going away but only seems to be
getting worse these days.

Many questions must be addressed.  The historical record desperately needs
to be corrected.

We can now kill each other in droves or we can find a way to overcome our
hatred and fear and make peace.  We each have a choice.  What is yours??

A First Nation student in Saskatchewan who wore a hoodie promoting
aboriginal treaty rights is allowed to wear it again after school
administrators initially asked her to conceal its message.

Thirteen-year-old Tenelle Star, a Grade 8 student in the small town of
Balcarres outside Regina, told CBC News her hoodie offended some fellow
students who found its message rude. The sweater reads “Got Land?” and has
“Thank an Indian” printed on the back.

“It supports our treaty and land rights,” Star told CBC News. “It’s

Teachers told Star some students had construed the message as “racist” and
asked her to wear the sweater inside-out instead. Some parents who got
wind of the matter also apparently complained to the school.

“We were taught Indians were on this land first. So why are people
offended?” Star told CBC.

The student is a member of the Star Blanket Cree Nation, covered under
Treaty 4, which was signed between the Cree and Saulteaux First Nations
and the Crown in 1874. It allowed for the settlement of much of Southern
Saskatchewan by Europeans.

It wasn’t until meetings between administrators and leaders of the First
Nation that the disagreement over “Got Land?” was resolved, with Star now
allowed to wear her sweater at school.

“I wear it proudly around the school,” she said.

This isn’t the first instance of “Got Land?” leading to confrontation. In
November, APTN reported on a young woman in Winnipeg who was denied a ride
on a public bus because of a similar sweater, with the driver insisting
there was no room for her after he read the back. Gelsey Sumner, 20, said
that as a result she was forced to walk alone through the city’s troubled
North End, where a violent sexual assault had recently occurred.

Jailed Mi’kmaq Warriors Denied Access To Spiritual Practices

The colonial state strikes again. State repression against and the
targeting of Mi’kmaq Warriors has escalated. The state is now denying 2
Mi’kmaq Warriors, Aaron Francis and Germain Jr Breau, access to
spiritual practices. Aaron and Jr have been held in Kanadian custody
without trial since the raid on Oct. 17th – just over 3 months. Read

Petition: Stop South Dakota's Kidnapping of Lakota Children

We are on the verge of an historic moment in Lakota history.
Lakota People's Law Project is launching the Campaign to Free Lakota Children, with a national petition (click to sign it here), calling on President Obama to authorize the grants needed to start tribal foster care programs, and put us within sight of bringing our children home.
There is an epidemic of hundreds of state kidnappings of Native children by South Dakota's Department of Social Services. Lakota kids are ten times more likely as non-Native kids to be forcibly removed from their homes and placed in the foster care system.  The State receives up to $79,000 per Lakota foster child annually from the federal government.
The Lakota People's Law Project has recently released a new 12-minute video 'Hearts on the Ground", documenting the heart breaking reality of the South Dakota DSS illegally denying Lakota grandmothers custody of their own grandchildren.  Please watch and share this video.
As part of our new Campaign to Free the Lakota Children, we would also appreciate the the help of those supporters who use Twitter to recommend the 'Hearts on the Ground" video  to the popular website Upwothy, with your suggestion to  @Upworthy.
We have the solution:  Foster care programs run by Lakota tribes, not the culturally biased and money-motivated DSS of South Dakota.
Please sign the petition--and help spread the word.  Together we can change history.

Sacred sites destroyed by NSW mine

Sacred sites destroyed by NSW mine

SACRED Aboriginal cultural and burial sites will be destroyed by the development of a coal mine in northern NSW, elders say.
Gomeroi elders have called on federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt to implement a 48-hour halt on works "in a desperate attempt to save burial sites and sacred places" from bulldozers at Whitehaven Coal's Maules Creek mine project near Boggabri.
They say they cannot understand why they've waited more than a fortnight for a response from the minister.
"The minister knows the bulldozers have been destroying our culture and heritage all day, every day including the weekend," the elders said in a statement.
"Whitehaven (is) ripping the guts out of our sacred sites right now. We fear that by the time Minister Hunt finally decides he has finished looking at our application carefully, it will be too late."
Protests against the $767 million mine and the damage it will do to a surrounding forest and the Aboriginal sites have been continuing for several weeks.
Several activists have been arrested and charged after locking themselves to gates and bulldozers while trying to stop work at the proposed open-cut coal mine.
After days of increased action, authorities last Tuesday closed the forest, effectively blocking protesters from entering for fear of fire.
Anyone caught entering the forest, which is closed for the rest of the fire season, could be hit with a $2200 fine.
Comment is being sought from Mr Hunt.

Destroyers Of Life

Destroyers Of Life

What do you think of people whose focus in life is to destroy another person's life? No matter how you slice it or what excuse they make, they are formulating (Planning) evil. And that evil will consume them. What is your focus?
John 3:20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

What is the light that they hate? John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

They show by their plotting and planning to hurt others, that they hate Jesus by their deeds.

So how do certain political factions in the USA and other countries that call themselves "Christian" plot and plan to harm or destroy the lives of others who they might disagree with still say that they are followers of Jesus Christ and no follow His words?

Are murderers followers of Christ? Because that is what they are doing with these new subtle weapons (and the not so subtle guns) that they use on their own citizens. And if they use the more subtle weapons that cause people to kill themselves or others why do "Christians" who know they are doing wrong stand by and not say a word? Fear?

The Bible says God is love. 1 John 4:8
New International Version (NIV)
8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:18
New International Version (NIV)
18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

So you governments and political parties who plan harm to others (including some in the USA government) whether the subtle kind or otherwise are the ones who really fear because you have to do evil in order for you to advance your agendas. Otherwise you would pray to this God that you pretend to serve and He would deliver you and promote your good plans for doing good. You can not do evil and say it is for a good cause. There is no such thing as doing evil for a good purpose. If your purpose were good, you would not have to do evil. If you really served the God that you pretend to serve, you never have to legislate morality. You would pray to God and He would give you the words to turn people's hearts and minds to him. But no, instead you do evil pretending that you are doing it for good. When in reality the one or two issues that you promote as "morality" are a smoke screen to cover your agenda of greed, corruption, control of others to make them slaves to your heartless cold minds. That are sociopathic in nature because your minds have no concern for the harm that you are doing to others or to the planet that you live on. Who does the book that you are supposed to follow say comes to kill, steal and destroy? Satan. And that is who who really follow with your destructive ways. Evil.

So I know that you do not serve the "Christian" God that you pretend to serve, because you don't act like the book that He gave you says to act. You are fakes, not at all spiritual and one day you will have to face this God that you serve and explain to Him why you lead so many people down a bad path that has nothing to do with Him. You will be sorry. But by then it will be too late.
